Science Department staff are documenting the biodiversity of the 索诺拉n Desert region, including the tropical and temperate areas in the Sierra Madre Occidental to the east of the 索诺拉n Desert proper and the isolated ‘sky island’ mountains of northern 索诺拉 and southeastern Arizona. Mexican Federal Highway 16 (MEX 16) which crosses the Sierra Madre to connect Hermosillo, 索诺拉, 和吉娃娃城, 吉娃娃, 于1992年竣工. 在索诺拉东部, MEX 16 provides an amazing transect from the 索诺拉n Desert in central 索诺拉 near Hermosillo to the forests of the Sierra (Búrquez et al. 1992). The transect begins at 180 m elevation in foothills thornscrub along the Río Yaqui near Tónichi.

Foothills thornscrub (matorral espinoso) also occurs at 460 to 550 m elevation in the rain-shadow valley at Curea. Tropical deciduous forest (selva baja caducifolia) is found in a broad band at 500 to 1,160 m. Oak woodland (bosque de encino) is present at 1,050-1,700 m often in a mosaic with pine-oak forest (bosque de pino-encino) at 1,220 to 2,240 m. Mixed-conifer forest (bosque de coníferas-mixtas) with Durango fir (pinabete duranguense, 冷杉(durangenis)在1,900 to 2,100 m in deep canyons on the western and southwestern edges of Mesa del Campanero. Grassland (pastizal) occurs in high valleys at 1,200 to 1,700 m surrounded by oak woodland or pine-oak forest.
